North London – Small Garden with Naturalistic Planting

Client brief

The client wanted to introduce a subtle cottage garden design that captures the essence of a classic cottage feel without making the space appear overly informal or crowded. Functionality and structure were paramount, along with year-round interest, creating a garden that would remain easy to maintain and control. As a semi-advanced gardener, the client desired planting with character while steering clear of a scheme that would quickly become overwhelming.

Design approach

The landscape design combines a contemporary layout with selected cottage-style elements in an organized and controlled manner. Warm Raj Green sandstone was chosen to create a welcoming and softer ambiance, while the circular brick patio not only introduces a traditional cottage influence but also serves as a focal seating area.

A previously selected 2.5m x 4m summer house was seamlessly integrated into the rear of the garden and incorporated into the overall layout rather than being treated as a separate feature.

The circular lawn effectively breaks up the softer cottage-style planting while introducing a cleaner, more modern form to the space. Trees were strategically positioned as focal points and layered with planting designed to provide structure and seasonal interest throughout the year.

The result is a garden that harmoniously balances practicality with cottage character — structured and organized, without sacrificing warmth or personality, making it one of the appealing small garden ideas.
