HOW TO PREPARE YOUR GARDEN BRIEF

Below you'll find detailed instructions for taking photos and measurements. In most cases, a few photos and basic dimensions are all we need. If you'd like to be more precise, follow the full instructions — but it's not essential.

how to take photos

Good photos are essential for understanding your space, including light conditions and existing features. When preparing your garden design brief, aim for at least 6 shots to accurately capture the area. Additionally, consider measuring garden dimensions to ensure a comprehensive overview while taking garden photos.

Garden Design Preparation: Your Complete Guide

  • Take a photo from each corner of the garden towards the opposite corner
  • Take a shot from the house looking down the full length of the garden
  • Take a shot from the bottom of the garden looking back towards the house
  • If possible, take an overhead photo from an upstairs window

How to measure

Simple length and width measurements are all we need. Small differences won't significantly affect the design.

MEASURING

  • Measure the width at the top of the garden — along the house wall
  • Measure the width at the bottom — at the far end of the garden
  • Measure the length along the left side
  • Measure the length along the right side
  • If there is a garage, gate or any structure attached to the house — please measure its width separately
  • If there are any existing features staying in the garden such as a tree, shed or outbuilding — note their approximate size and how far they are from the nearest fence or wall

Difficult to measure?

  • We know this can look daunting — but you don't need to be this precise

MEASURING unusual shapes

  • If your garden has an unusual shape — such as a curved boundary, diagonal fence line or L-shape — don't worry about measuring every angle. Simply do your best with the main dimensions and send us more photos.
  • If you provide your property address in the questionnaire, we will measure your garden boundaries using satellite imagery and prepare a layout for your approval before any payment is taken. Please note that satellite-based measurements and boundary outlines are very close to the actual dimensions, but may not be as precise as measurements taken on the ground.

HOW TO CHECK LEVELS

Garden levels can often be identified from photos. If there are any significant level changes, feel free to note the difference — minor steps and small drops we'll pick up from the photos ourselves.

YOUR OWN DESCRIPTION

Your brief and expectations are essential to getting the design right. Our online form includes material preferences, but it's just as important to tell us what you want in your garden and roughly how much space you'd like each element to take up. Whether your patio is 15m² or 50m² makes a significant difference — the more detail you give us upfront, the faster we can deliver and the fewer questions we'll need to ask along the way.

BUDGET

Letting us know your budget is equally important. If it's a firm limit you don't want to exceed, we'll design within it. If it's flexible, the garden can always be split into phases — so you can build it in stages without compromising the overall design.
